R.I.P. Mighty

About 2 weeks ago, Mighty passed away unexpectantly.  He had had a cough for about a week.  Then one day, he started foaming at the mouth and he was cold and a little stiff.  We rushed him to the emergency vet.  His heart stopped beating on the way and we thought we were going to lose him, but then he came back.  When we got to the hospital, after a quick examination, the doctor said he was in the latter stages of heart failure and that there wasn't much chance of survival, even with removing the fluid in his heart and lungs.  There was nothing we could do as it was a congenital.  We learned he had been born with a heart murmur and that dachshunds are 2.5 times more likely to develop heart problems than any other breed.  We said goodbye to him and watched him die.  It was one of the saddest and hardest things we had to go through.  He was such a unique dog, more like a child than a dog because he had so much personality.  What made it even harder is that we got him a month after we got married so we've always had him.  He was a part of our family with a Christmas stocking and everything.  It was very hard for us to get used to him not being around and Minnie was depressed for a while, but we're all doing better now.  Now I just prefer to remember the good times and honor his loving memory.

His little floppy ears used to always flip over.  We always had to "restore them to factory setting".

I really miss how any time we would sit down or bring out a blanket, he would be right there on our laps to snuggle us.  He was such a cutie!

He was so photogenic!  And he hated wearing sweaters!  He used to make us laugh so much!

Our first Christmas together when he was just a puppy.  We will definitely miss him.  Goodbye Mighty.
